I visited the PA for my 4 week (but on the 5th) post of exam. Earlier in the day, Julie my PT did some measurements and wrote a report for the doctor. I can straighten my leg to -1º and bend it to 127º. This is all good news and I am progressing to where I need to be right now.
I am experiencing a lot of kneecap pain this week. Even when I just lift my leg, if it's just a little bent, it hurts like hell. If I straighten my leg and engage my quads, no pain. Julie says it's because my quads are not strong enough. So way more exercises doing those.
We've also been working on hip strength. Using the bands and leg lifts and balance. Hard work but I do feel stronger. I also get to add heat which feel OH SO GOOD. The heat loosens up my muscles.
Swelling is way down. This is good. I am doing more walking around, outside, and driving. Running some simple errands to some stores, but still no long outings. Lunch with friends, coffee dates, all good. Tonight hubby and I went to Costco. I did good. I got to push the cart, which is usually hubby's favorite thing to do. I feel so special. Ha ha.
It has been frustrating to not have my full mobility back. It's strange, the first month you make so much progress so fast, to a point. Then it's all about building strength and working on balance. Hard work with slow progress as the reward. I know this process will take a year, but only being 5 weeks into it, it's hard to believe it's going to still take 11 months. I will work hard.
On the plus side, I have my energy back. Stamina feels close to pre-surgery levels. I still can't walk stairs, so that's a major drag. But I can walk to the mail box and back (1/3 mile round trip). A lot of small victories add up.
Oh, so my scars are healing ok. I do have a large area of numbness on the outside of my leg and on top of my knee cap. The PA thinks this is permanent. I suppose only time will tell. It will be a bummer to have the top of my kneecap numb though. I can't quite kneel yet, but I can put some weight on it; like laying on my stomach. There's also this knot under the scar on the outside of my leg. This may be scar tissue and the sutures that are supposed to dissolve. When I had my foot surgery, the sutures were pushed out of my foot by my immune system. It was so weird to see a string poking through my scar one day.... anyway, lets hope that doesn't happen here. If it does, I'll go in and have them remove it.
I can't think of much else to update on. Typical muscle cramps from using muscles that haven't been used in a month. Ok, I'll post again in a week or so. Cheers!
